Spiderman Toxic City

Spiderman Toxic City – Comic book action at its finest!

If you have been looking forward to playing a decent comic book style platform game then I reckon your spidey senses must be tingling at the prospect of playing this entertaining game!
If you love Spiderman (and yes, let’s face it, he’s always been one of the coolest super-heroes to grace the page and screen) so it’s about time that there’s a homage to him on the mobile phone game market and I’m pleased to say that this definitely is. There were times when I found myself reliving the classic Spiderman game which I used to play on my classic Gameboy of yesteryear. So if reliving your youth is something you’re eager to do then this certainly pushes the right buttons. Gone are the limited web restrictions, you have an unlimited amount which you can use to restrain your opponent – or better yet, lasso them and hurl them anywhere you fancy (especially at other opponents). Alternatively by jumping up and tapping the up button you will be happily re-enacting the ending scenes of all the movies (you know, where Spiderman leaps between all the skyscrapers).
The game is pretty basic in terms of what you have to do. In true retro gaming joy you start by moving along the scrolling levels beating up thugs, villains, mutants and of course some of the biggest baddies from the comic books including Green Goblin and Rhino amongst many more. In true to form fashion, you have to clear the levels of all the various bad guys before being presented with the chance to smack the smug grins off the infamous evil foe’s faces.
The majority of battles with the end of level bosses comprise of them using their powers to knock down boulders, send fire balls, electric bolts or other rather nasty things your way. You then have to use your skills to weave your way out of their path and wait for the chance for them to be stunned or weakened – so you can unleash a combo or two whilst they’re able to be hurt.
The game may be simple but this is effective and the great detail and entertaining script that develops as you play keeps you really entertained and helps you play on just a little longer. It’s fair to say there’s hours of thumb-twitching fun and the controls are nice and responsive, helping you breeze through the obstacles and villains in no uncertain terms.
If you can tear yourself away from the story mode, you can try your webbed fingers at the time attack mode and survival modes.
Ultimately if you enjoy retro games, platformers and anything with a superhero or super-villain or two, then this is certainly going to be a title for you. There are enough levels to keep even the most enthusiastic player busying for a little while. The only area this game falls short on is the difficulty setting can’t be changed to give you more of a challenge. However, with the mini-games available between some of the levels is a nice touch and helps break things up a bit. Also being able to upgrade your spidey is a cool option and one you would be advised to do. Irritatingly you can only do this on certain occasions and if you skip over this option you’re going to have a harder challenge ahead of you.
