Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Gold Knights 2 – Smite or be smitten!
Ghosts ’n Goblins has always held quite a dear place in my heart over the gaming years. From its initial incarnation some years ago it has come back to enthral us platform loving folk with more wizardry and hacking and slashing action than you could shake a rather big sword at.
So needless to say if you have played the earlier game or like platform games of this ilk you’ll be in for quite a treat with the detailed graphics and well polished animation and action. Movement is pretty smooth and flawless although the controls themselves are a little fiddly to navigate in any proper sense due to much of the screen being covered with your thumbs. I know this isn’t the only iPhone/iPod touch game on the market which uses the touch screen in an effort to mimic a control pad, but I really haven’t come across a really decent effort and this sadly falls short on wowing me too – despite you being able to position the ‘d-pad’ wherever you wish, but clearly you can’t move these too far either way as you’ll see even less of the screen or be unable to move at all!
On the plus side however, if you can battle your way through hordes of skeletons, giant flowers and other tough opposition, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with enveloping yourself in some pretty lavish graphics and an engaging story which will keep you compelled in completing the quest.
The action is pretty spectacular and wave after wave of the undead will keep your thumbs twitching in a frenzied blur and no doubt put a huge smile on your face whilst you play.
So if you are a fan of platform games then this is a pretty decent effort on your iPhone/iPod. Alternatively if you’re new to this then you will no doubt find it entertaining and could get you bitten by the bug quite firmly. Although this doesn’t quite overcome the control issue for me as much as on other platforms, this is a good effort and should receive a B+ for effort. Unfortunately, for me the controls are a bit of a let down and make the game itself a lot harder than it would otherwise be.
For entertainment value this game is way up there with all the rest and certainly should you add this title to your collection, you will be anything but disappointed!

An engaging story
Two characters with different attributes to play to your strengths
Lots of creepy ghouls for you to dispatch with your trusty sword
Negatives
The controls on screen are a bit of a nightmare – motion controls may be the way to go?!
Quite difficult and no option to make this harder or easier
Customizing your character costs you 59p each
