Cube Smashers – It’s block-busting fun!
Do you have a thing for busting blocks? Then this puzzle game could definitely be worth a closer inspection!
This title as the name suggests uses a grid of 25 blocks, each with a different colour on the six different sides. What you must do is rotate the block to make a row of three or more cubes of the same colour which then bursts giving you a score. This sounds pretty simple and for all intents and purposes is, apart from for the following reason; the cube can only be rotated four ways – meaning you can only get to five of the six coloured faces of the cube. The only way you can gain access to the ‘hidden’ side of the block is by working your way round the grid and bursting as many other possible combinations which in turn will cause the remaining cubes to tumble and rotate, and introducing more cubes to the game to replace those you’ve eliminated.
This, combined with the game getting trickier due to the game speed increasing as you increase with every level, makes the puzzle develop quite quickly into a fiddly game which will keep you guessing and indeed playing for many hours.
To give you a little more challenge and flexibility, you are rewarded and punished as you play. On the upside you have flashing bonus balls which either rotate all or some of the grid’s cubes (which can in turn increase your score) or blow up all the adjacent blocks. Adversely however, should you be beaten by the clock, one of the cubes will be frozen out and made unplayable. This ensures you keep your thumb moving around the grid as fast as you possibly can to ensure you don’t let this happen! Although, if it does, you have a healing block which will turn one of the frozen blocks back to normal. The game ends when you run out of available combinations for you to play.
The controls are straightforward, by using the d-pad or keypad, you move the cursor around the grid. By pressing the OK or 5 buttons you select the cube of choice and then by using the directions again you spin the cube in the desired way. As soon as the combination is made, it will automatically burst and the sequence begins all over again. Should you make an error, you can cancel the selected cube by pressing the OK or 5 buttons again.
In honesty, this game is a total winner for posing you with a simple but very addictive game. It’s something that once you’ve gone through the tutorial you will have a hang of it and will be totally hooked.
