Rudolph The Red Nose Racer – So this is what the reindeer get up to on their time off!
Have you ever wondered what Rudolph and the other reindeer got up to when they weren’t busy helping Santa deliver his presents on Christmas Eve? No?! Well me neither, but this does certainly seem like a pretty good suggestion.
Rudolph The Red Nose Racer is a racing game with a twist, and yes, for those of you who haven’t guessed what it is, instead of driving a car, you’re in charge of a sleigh and two famous reindeers from Father Christmas’ posse. More importantly however is the fact that you can play against others through using Bluetooth features on your phone.
There’s only one course for you to challenge you and your friends with. As you can imagine, in light of this, it makes the game pretty one-dimensional. That being said however, this game’s far from easy and the twists and turns and the computer or real opponents all play a crucial role in ensuring this game keeps addictive and entertaining and far from easy for you to win.
No matter which team you pick in single player mode, you appear at the back of the pack. You are then pushed in a four lap race to get from fourth to pole position. This isn’t as simple however as you feel it may be as firstly, your reindeer is no faster than any of the others on the track, meaning that every turn you make has to be sharp to ensure you shave off the lap time and that you can move closer towards the opponents’ positions. The other most challenging feature in this game is when you come close or into contact with another racer as you’ll lose speed and it will cost you crucial time. Lastly, there are checkpoints dotted around the circuit which means if you try to cut corners or get stuck, you’ll be re-spawned at the last cleared checkpoint – usually costing you even more time.
Overall then, this game is great fun for anyone who wants to play with another through Bluetooth. The main grumble I have with this is the lack of more than one race track for you to master. This for me is a little frustrating as the rest of the game has all the ingredients of a good game. The game tends to lean very heavily on the fun you get by jostling for position between you and other players on the grid. If it had an opportunity to progress through unlocking more upgrades for the sleigh either during or after play, and the option to unlock more courses this game would definitely be getting top marks. However as things stand, this game warrants a good but not excellent rating. If you enjoy racing games, there are others which may give you more festive cheer.
