3D Technology is coming along in waves, with much of the advances being pushed by the gaming scene. Although we're starting to see more TVs appear on the market and dare I say it, becoming more and more the norm, we're still a little way off having this replace all the standard TV channels which are only starting to switch to the option of HD.
Unless we have another digital upgrade forced upon us with the elimination of analogue radio waves to beam the signal to our box which we in the UK have had to do over the past few years. Quite why we need the frequencies freed up seems a little unclear as the benefit to cost ratio seems a little off. One certain benefit is overall control of the means to communicate - unless you have a digital receiver hooked up to a dish or cable, you can't get to view anything. With this sense of control it does also mean that we are drawing a step closer to a big brother scenario - knowing the state can observe (or at least the ones who are your service provider). With things like selective advertising tuning into our online activity, it's not a great stretch of the imagination to show that offline activity will also start to be as targeted to the viewer - especially with advertising having to work harder to grab your attention and all the agencies and advertisers are demanding more results for their money.
Bringing things back to technology, it's a bit of a hushed fact that the 3D devices which work without the use of glasses cause headaches in the viewer after sustained periods of use. The Nintendo 3DS for example has quelled the report that players had suffered headaches during and after use of the handheld device. Could this be something that only impacts on a small proportion of the public? Could it just be that staring at a small screen which has this effect causes nausea and headaches? Alternatively can this be a sign of things to come and no matter what advances there are, some unfortunately will not be able to make advantage of it comfortably?
I guess we'll just have to watch this space and see what happens...
