Doom II RPG - Always look on the bright side of life... especially when armed with a chainsaw!
The epic and longstanding first-person shooter Doom has been given a new twist with taking all the good elements from the original game and putting it into a turn based RPG.
Some of us true Doom gamers may be thinking that this isn’t quite the thing to do, but in actual fact it’s a great way give a breath of fresh air to this and all other shoot-‘em-as-soon-as-you-see-‘em type games. The hack’n’slash entertainment and gore is still evident throughout the claustrophobic hallways and corridors which are synonymous with the Doom game. In truth the only time when it becomes evident that this game is turn based is when you get yourself into a battle, otherwise this game’s a superb rendition of the more powerful versions found on PC and console.
Saying this about a game which is on your mobile is definitely all credit to the work that the creators have done behind the scenes. The graphics run smoothly and even the movie style sequences are very impressive and atmospheric. During the gameplay itself, the animation of the opponents is well detailed and despite the creature’s rather 2D style, the rest of the graphics more than compensate for this oversight.
So what’s the game like to play? Controls are sharp and you can use the d-pad for the usual forward/backward/turning left or right and fire/action commands, but for strafing left or right you must use the keypad. Another reason to use the keypad is to cycle through the variety of weapons you collect along the way.
The game itself is a bit of trial and error when you come into contact with the various nasty foes as you explore every twist and turn of the various space stations and lairs. For example the gun is good to pick off the enemy at distance (and not bad up-close either), but the chainsaw is excellent at decimating the zombies however not so good at hurting some of the others.
You are rewarded most of all throughout this game by ensuring you explore every twist and turn. Not only will you get into more fights, but you can find more weapons, crates (full of goodies), mini-games (which improve your shooting accuracy, your speed and agility etc.) So this ensures the game evolves as your own skills do, and as you encounter tougher aliens with each and every level, your brains and muscle will give you a slightly better chance of coming out of the battle alive.
Ultimately this game gives you all the benefits of a first person shooter but much more user friendly and less frantic. I say this as you can dip into your inventory list and take nano-drinks which give you invulnerability to fire or increase in speed and strength or consume a snack which could give keep you alive between battles. Before you know it, you’re planning and preparing yourself rather than simply reacting in the middle of a fight.
So if you’re a Doom lover or an RPG fan, you will certainly enjoy this game and get to appreciate it for its intricate and entertaining detail. Quite simply – it’s brilliant!
