For lovers of quirky and the more traditional old-school types of game, look no further than the rather curious title – Cyber Elk.
This platformer is a superbly detailed and enjoyable title which I’ve found myself playing out of sheer enjoyment rather than just for professional research purposes. To the credit of the developers, this is not something which is easy to do (as I do get to see and review quite a few titles).
To put things into context, you play Agent Kappa, aka Cyber Elk (a cyborg elk) who is quite the opposite of gun-shy and certainly only too pleased to leap from level to level dispatching aliens, robots, gun-turrets, flying nasties and collecting power-ups and ammo along the way. Why you ask are you playing such a nutty creature? Well, in 2029 all the agents of the Man in Black (which monitor relationships of humans and other life-forms) are wiped out at the hands of hostile aliens. Rather than bring back the elite guys in black, the decision was made to establish a brand new team, the ExtraTerrestrials Task Force (E.T.T.F.) compiled of only cyborgs – of which Agent Kappa/Cyber Elk is the cream of the crop.
For the lovers of Earthworm Jim, Mario and all other retro-platform games, you will definitely feel right at home with this game. Cyber Elk packs quite a powerful punch, armed with a single-shooter rifle, a machine gun, rocket launcher and grenade launcher from the outset, you are pretty well equipped to take down anything you come into contact with. Fortunately despite all the weapons in your arsenal, it’s not a cakewalk as there are four main areas, and four levels within each – which end in the end of level boss, with their own individual fighting tactics.
If platform games are not your usual game, I would still say the fun and challenging qualities that this title provides will certainly mean you will miss out if you don’t have it! This is a great little game which will keep your hands and mind busy for hours and hours and I can’t recommend highly enough to anyone with an inner child which has needed that certain itch scratched!
Unlike many other titles out there, this one offers smooth graphics and nicely detailed animation. The damage inflicted both to you and to your foe are quite realistic which makes this a challenging and rewarding feature that certainly keeps you on your toes. The controls are very intuitive and a radical improvement to the controls experienced by other games in this genre. With so many different objects to grab hold of or use in your quest to get to the end and characters to blast at in equally creative and challenging ways, you will certainly be entertained for some time.
