The devil has some pretty gruesome associates, but Felix the Devil definitely is far from scary at all. In the second instalment of Felix the Devil it’s pretty much business as usual as far as platformers go. In brief you jump about to explore cavernous castle keeps and pirate ships and try not to fall foul of the devious traps and creatures set out to end your game before you can complete it.
I would certainly recommend this game if you enjoy Super Mario Bros, Crash Bandicoot, Castlevania or even Captain Comet. There are quite a few similarities such as there’s a good level of humour which is maintained throughout the game and the cartoon images are certainly pretty to look at.
The storyline of the game basically consists of Felix no longer being evil and doing his best to do good. Armed with a trident and the occasional magic spell, you must leap around finding keys to unlock doors to access all 11 different levels. This ends up being quite a varied game with plenty of pirates thrown in for good measure on Captain Drake’s island.
Possibly this game will not be quite in the same leagues as other titles which have complicated and detailed plotlines or depth to character development. However there is certainly a charm to this game that will keep your hands busy for certainly a few hours.
You can stun enemies by jumping on their heads, this freezes them in place and allows you to use them as a platform to reach inaccessible areas. When you have finished bouncing on top of them you can dispatch them quite quickly using your fiery pitchfork (which isn’t too clear to see as it’s too small on the screen). Unlike other platforms which I could mention, the controls are tight, the moves are responsive and you will be finding it a breeze to do what you intended to do.
There are hidden treasures to discover on your escapades around the various rooms and vaults. You will need to keep your eyes open and distinguish between pretty backdrop imagery and actual interactive elements in the game, but this all adds to the enjoyment on offer.
If you find things getting a little difficult you have help on hand by the wizard Godrick who gives you the occasional hint and tips and indeed most useful of all, teach you magic spells which will help you conquer the level and game overall!
Unlike most platform games, you are able to go back and forth between levels which provides a new dimension and interesting opportunity and depth to the game. So as your skills develop you can access more areas of the game.
So overall, this is a modern twist on a classic platform style game and is enjoyable and fun. It’s more straight forward than some games so will leave some gamers chomping at the bit, but will leave some a little frustrated as there could be even more done.
