Did you enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog when growing up? Or should I say did you enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog Part 1 on the mobile? If so then you’ll definitely be wanting to pick up where you left off and jump right to it.
If like me you struggled to get passed the first handful of levels as you always fell foul of the traps and creatures in the levels or if you managed to get to the end and were defeated by Dr Robotnik’s various devious contraptions (which were the end of level bosses), then you’ll be pleased to know that you can start the game from the middle. OK, I know, this is cheating a little but, hey, nobody’s perfect right?
Well, as you probably know already, you play Sonic who’s charged with the mission to find as many gold rings as possible and defeat Dr Robotnik and all his cronies. To do so, you must run, jump, spin and solve some fairly simple puzzles to help you complete each level.
Sonic’s prone to attack when on the move, however when tucked up into a spinning ball he’ll pose quite a prickly customer for any adversary you may come across. It’s important to gather the rings as this will not just give you a better score in the end of the level, but also will give you a better chance of survival. Should you be hit by an enemy you’ll lose all your rings, which you must then quickly try to recapture before they disappear for good. Should you fail to do this and are hit again by a creature or trap (spiked floor/wall or pendulum etc.) then you will lose a life and must restart the level from the last save point (which look a little like a lollipop). You have 3 lives as standard and will only be rewarded by extra lives by collecting enough rings or finding the bonuses hidden around the various levels.
As with any game, the later levels tend to be the hardest and fiddlier for you to complete; so this is something to consider before buying this game. If you are familiar with the game or with platform games anyway, this game will feel just like your old favourite pair of slippers – comfortable and very easy to get used to. If you’re up for a challenge then this game also poses a very good variety of action, adventure, logic and a splash of luck for good measure.
You’ll need to be patient with this game, as mentioned in my previous review, you have everything that was in the original game put into your mobile. The main problem with this is that the screen’s not laid out horizontally so you are flying blind at times and run the risk of losing your life and rings unnecessarily by rushing at the wrong time.
In the end, this is a great little game and is perfect for whiling away the hours. Despite it being only the second half of the game, there’s plenty of stuff to do and will keep your thumbs very busy.
