Some times it’s hard being a drip and this is really made quite clear in the game Dewy’s Adventure.
Ironically, most games tend to focus on being the hero with superhero powers or at least a big gun or a big fast car. In Dewy’s Adventure you play a drop of water who although isn’t quite helpless, isn’t exactly your everyday hero. You get to stroll or more like slide around the place exploring your world; sliding up and down slopes trying to gather as many crystals as you can.
As you can guess, controls aren’t exactly the easiest being a fairly formless bit of water. You can move left or right, up and down in a pseudo-3D environment. Your attack and jump are the same button (5/select) and you can turn Dewy into a frozen ice cube or a boiling water. When in ice-mode, Dewy can spin around which can help clear objects and enemies out of the way. Similarly, when in steam-mode, Dewy will zap your target with bolts of lightning.
The game is largely a mixture of explore and avoid or battle your creatures you come in contact with. You are tasked to collect the crystals but also the mushrooms you find in a rather cute cartoon storybook style environment which range from lush forests, dark caverns to snow-capped mountains and beyond.
Great attention to detail has been paid to the development and creation of the game. When in frozen environments you’ll notice that Dewy’s body temperature keeps cooling down, meaning he will change from a drip to his frozen form. You will find that the only way you’ll be able to transform into steam-mode is to find a hot spring where he can warm up.
The games full of pretty good attention to detail and creative little gems which all add to the overall appeal of the game. I would say that the only negative part I have found is the controls especially when fighting.
Dewy’s able to automatically locate and select an adversary when in range. However, when there are more than one trying to attack you, it’s all too clear that Dewy’s not too good at fighting and his jump attack, although is relatively strong, is also fairly inaccurate. For the small creatures which only take one good hit, this is only a bit of a nuisance but when up against an end of level boss, you will be lucky to get a few hits in before you end up history. Having said that, you can use the special powers Dewy possesses to try and stay alive as long as you can and then hit them when they’re vulnerable.
Overall then, this is a decent game which has plenty going for it and will certainly keep you playing over and over again trying to get all the crystals and mushrooms and beating up all who get in your way.
