Age of Zombies – Time travelling zombie extravaganza
It’s often been believed that zombies come about from either a weird strain of virus or voodoo and if the movies are to be read as fact, it’s tended to only have started in the more modern times. Age of Zombies takes a nice twist on the theme and of course, an evil mad scientist is behind the zombie infestation but it’s a great bit of imagination taking them on in various times and locations.
Starting off in prehistoric times, you must clear up zombie cavemen and an end of level zombie T-Rex! As you eliminate every zombie you will get to move onto the next stage and working through to more modern times.
Moving is done by using the left of the two ‘joysticks’ meanwhile firing your weapon is done through using your right ‘joystick’. To move, simply press the direction you wish to move in and you’re off. Shooting is done through picking the direction you wish to fire and watching the bullets fly. Armed with a slow firing pistol with unlimited bullets and facing a nearly unimaginable amount of zombies, you would be quite a crack-shot if you manage to survive the level without losing one of your three lives. However, not to worry, help is at hand in the form of five grenades (which either kill zombies outright or turn them into flame balls which will die quite quickly – although you should still try to keep your distance as they’re still able to harm you until they die).
To help you further, you have numerous power-ups available to collect as you move around the level. Ranging from more grenades to shotgun, SMG and rifles and so on, each weapon has a slightly different special ability. Shotguns are better at short distances but blast away in several directions at once, SMG’s are rapid firing and have a good range so comfortably will eliminate anything dumb enough to fall into sight and the rifle is slow firing but can blow a clear line through multiple enemies. One pick-up not to be missed is the extra life which will turn up from time to time.
A nice feature that this game has is that it shows you the direction power-ups are in as well as where the zombies are whenever they’re off screen.
At the end of the day this game is pretty nifty and certainly has a great amount of action which will keep you in a bit of a frenzy for hours. Also if story mode has got a bit much, you can try your hand at survival mode once you’ve cleared the level.
Positives
Good sounds and graphics
Plenty of zombies to blow away
Reminds me of Cannon Fodder in a way – which is no bad thing at all!
Negatives
Very repetitive
Zombies are sitting ducks at some points, meaning you can sit tight and clear a level if you wait in the right place
The controls can move if you forget to lock them into place which can have some interesting impact to your game play – thankfully you can edit this in the options setting
